Hi Joe, Ran a search and found this - hope it helps: 'Try using the 'Epson 9-Pin series CUPS v1.1' driver included with Mac OS X under manufacturer 'ESP'. You will need to use the 'Advanced' USB setup to create this printer using Printer Setup Utility. Please see this Gimp-Print FAQ entry for a hint on how to set up this printer. The process is generally identical to the Gimp-Print process except that you will select the driver mentioned above at the end.

Edit: Just noticed this link is out of date - sorry 😟 Will keep trying. Z Message was edited by: Zlig. Joseph Smolarz wrote: The lights on the printer default back to draft mode. If the lights are reverting back to draft mode after printing, it would indicate that the printer driver is setting the print mode for each job. This is as it should be. A quick glance at the User's Guide for this printer would seem to indicate that you can print out and change many or most of the default settings for the printer using the control panel on the printer.

I am not sure what difference it would make to change the default printing mode if the printing software is controlling this for each print job. BUT I can't find any settings in the print window to select any mode of printing. Look under the pop up menus for an item called Printer Features. If you are running OS X 10.5.x, you may need to toggle the disclosure triangle to the right of the printer name in the print window to access these features. In OS X 10.4, you will find the Printer Features under the Copies & Pages pop up menu.

OK, under the Printer Features tab I get 3 options: 60 x 720 DPI - not a typo on my part. 120 x 72 DPI 240 x 72 DPI I printed the same page on all 3 settings. The top setting was so large and distorted that I ended up turning off the printer. The second gave me the draft print I saw before (this is the default setting) The third gave me draft print that was more dense. I then printed the test page and it appeared near letter quality (much better than anything from the computer). The lights on the printer actually change to draft when printing and revert back to the setting I initially chose after printing is complete. Thanks for the extra info BDAqua.

The reason I asked about the correct dpi usage is that I found a PPD for the Epson 9 pin LX1170 at. It looks like it may work with the built in rastertoepson filter that the generic 9 pin PPD uses. In the PPD for the LX1170, I found the following resolutions.OpenUI.Resolution/Output Resolution: PickOne.OrderDependency: 20 AnySetup.Resolution.DefaultResolution: 180dpi.Resolution 60dpi/60 DPI: 'setpagedevice'.Resolution 120dpi/120x60 DPI: 'setpagedevice'.Resolution 180dpi/180 DPI: 'setpagedevice'.Resolution 360x180dpi/360x180 DPI: 'setpagedevice'.Resolution 360dpi/360 DPI: 'setpagedevice'.CloseUI:.Resolution It may be a 'trick' of the driver to use the higher dpi settings for the overstriking of the 72 dpi resolution.

It thought it worth at least asking the question. So something didn't go right with the install, that first one should read 60.72 DPI. That turns out to be a typo in the 9 pin PPD for CUPS 1.3.x that is obviously causing problems. From the CUPS 1.3.x generic 9 pin PPD.OpenUI.Resolution: PickOne.OrderDependency: 10.0 AnySetup.Resolution.DefaultResolution: 120x72dpi.Resolution 60x720dpi: 'setpagedevice'.Resolution 120x72dpi: 'setpagedevice'.Resolution 240x72dpi: 'setpagedevice'.CloseUI:.Resolution. It may be a 'trick' of the driver to use the higher dpi settings for the overstriking of the 72 dpi resolution. It thought it worth at least asking the question. I'm fairly certain that's for the 24 pin printers.

For 24-pin printers (in native 24-pin mode), Vertical is 180dpi, horizontal (dpi): 60, 90, 120, 180, 240, 360. Many models could achieve higher vertical-density through fractional linefeeds (1/144' or 1/216' for 9-pin, 1/360' for 24-pin), for a maximum-rating of 240x216, or 360x360. That turns out to be a typo in the 9 pin PPD for CUPS 1.3.x that is obviously causing problems. From the CUPS 1.3.x generic 9 pin PPD Certainly is. You can edit that file by hand!

The Gutenprint drivers do no support any dot matrix printers. Looking around I found info from 'The Linux Foundation' at I did download their print driver, but think I need to download 'ESP Ghostscript'? Or I am missing something about installing it properly You would indeed need to install both Foomatic-RIP and Ghostscript. These are available from. The description in the driver code for the epson 9 high Ghostscript device says that.

'eps9high' is a special mode for 9-pin printers where scan lines are. interleaved in multiple passes to produce high vertical resolution at. the expense of several passes of the print head. 'eps9mid' is a special. mode for 9 pin printers too, scan lines are interleaved but with next. vertical line. You may be able to judge whether this might be a suitable driver based on whether your printer prints its test page using this method.

It might be hard to tell. You may also see entries in the OpenPrinting database for other Epson FX printers like the FX880.

The listing shows use of the 'omni' drivers. Do not waste your time trying this route. The omni drivers are ancient and I was never able to get them compiled in OS X. Apple Footer.
