I am not sure what difference it would make to change the default printing mode if the printing software is controlling this for each print job. BUT I can't find any settings in the print window to select any mode of printing. Look under the pop up menus for an item called Printer Features. If you are running OS X 10.5.x, you may need to toggle the disclosure triangle to the right of the printer name in the print window to access these features. In OS X 10.4, you will find the Printer Features under the Copies & Pages pop up menu.

OK, under the Printer Features tab I get 3 options: 60 x 720 DPI - not a typo on my part. 120 x 72 DPI 240 x 72 DPI I printed the same page on all 3 settings. The top setting was so large and distorted that I ended up turning off the printer. The second gave me the draft print I saw before (this is the default setting) The third gave me draft print that was more dense. I then printed the test page and it appeared near letter quality (much better than anything from the computer).
